A stinkhorn which is a mushroom. are found on rotting,decaying material. They can form in compost bins or as I found them growing in mulch. Not all fungous require cool moist conditions. Their rank smell attracts flies who then carry the spores to other rotting materials.Have no fear stinkhorns are not dangerous in fact they are a delicacy in ChinaStinkhorn fungus?
Just like most fungi they require cool moist areas with lots of organic matter. The 'Stinkhorn' that you see is actually just a very small portion of the entire organism.
